Auditor: Sykes (D) Won't Face Election Charges, Reardon (D) to Leave Race

As reported in the Akron Beacon Journal here, the Summit County Board of Elections voted unanimously not to refer a case against Barbara Sykes (D-Akron) to the county prosecutor and sheriff for an investigation into illegal voting. Sykes' lawyer told the board that Sykes had no criminal intent when she voted in 2005 from her former address. Sykes had voted in September and November from her former address in Akron's Precinct 3-K after she had moved to Precinct 3-N. The ballots in the two precincts were the same.

Sykes has gained the endorsement of the Ohio Democratic Party over her primary opponent, County Treasurer John Reardon (D-Youngstown). Reardon canceled his appearance before the screening committee, indicating that he planned a related announcement sometime this week. As reported in the Youngstown Vindicator here, Reardon's actions appear to indicate that he will withdraw from the race. The Vindicator's telephone calls to Reardon and his chief deputy treasurer were not returned.
