MENTOR — A state representative and Madison Township resident was arrested early Friday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence after being involved in a rear end collision.
State Rep. Timothy J. Cassell, D-Madison Township, was arrested by the Mentor police after he failed to stop on the eastbound entrance ramp at Heisley Road and Route 2, slamming the front of his car into a stopped vehicle, police reports show.
Cassell, 36, of 6168 Middle Ridge Road, represents the 63rd Ohio House seat.
Officers conducted field sobriety tests, but Cassell declined a breath test.
“The investigation revealed that (Cassell) was at fault in the rear-end collision and appeared to be intoxicated,” Mentor Police Capt. John Jaros said.
Cassell was arrested on charges of drunken driving and failure to maintain an assured clear distance, police reports show.
The unidentified female driver of the other vehicle was transported by the Mentor Fire Department to Lake West Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, police reports show.
Cassell was released on bond and will be arraigned in Mentor Municipal Court at 8 a.m., Monday.
Cassell’s driving record includes a plethora of traffic charges in Lake and Ashtabula counties including driving under suspension, having no operator’s license, speeding, failing to follow rules of motorcycling, and failure to wear a seatbelt.
Earlier this year, Cassell publicly supported a Bill which would stiffen penalties and lengthen jail time for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (OVI) charges after the second offense, calling those drivers, “a danger to society.”
Cassell could not be reached at his Mentor or Columbus offices for comment Friday.
****Cassell pleaded no contest to OVI charges and got probation and community service.
