Ohio Sen 7th: Smith (D) Observes 9/11 By Donating Blood

7th Ohio Senate District candidate Rick Smith (D-Cincinnati) will donate his 72nd pint of blood at 1:00 pm today at Hoxworth Blood Center’s new facility at 9554 S. Mason-Montgomery Rd., Governor’s Pointe Shopping Center (between Bigg’s & Staples), in Mason, Ohio.

Smith has “universal donor” O-negative blood and is a frequent blood donor. He has served as a match for a Sickle Cell Anemia patient, which he calls an extra incentive to give blood regularly.

“I believe that the best way to honor the sacrifices of those who died on September 11th is to do something that helps the community become stronger,” Smith said. “A strong community is the bedrock of Homeland Security.” Smith encourages all members of the community to find their own way to help, either through blood donation or some other type of volunteer service.

Smith will also be in attendance at the Anderson Township Firefighter’s Memorial Dinner, celebrating the lives of the fallen service men and women of Southern Ohio.

Last Thursday, Smith announced that he has received the support of the Cincinnati AFL-CIO Labor Council and other area labor groups. “Now, more than ever, we must celebrate the value of hard work and the union organizations which have brought so much benefit to our lives over the last century that we now take for granted (such as safe working conditions and the 40-hour work week). Today, unions are leading the fight for affordable healthcare and fair wages.”

Smith's labor endorsements include the Greater Cincinnati UAW-CAP Council; Int’l Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 212; Int’l Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, LL 912; Int’l Brotherhood of Teamsters, Local 100; Plumbers Pipe Fitters and MES, Local 392; and Sheet Metal Workers Int’l Association, Local 24. He is also endorsed by Ohio Planned Parenthood and the Cincinnati Women’s Political Caucus.

Smith has been a resident of Southern Ohio since 1987, has a BA in Politics from Princeton University and an MBA from Wharton Business School at the University of Pennsylvania. He has nineteen years of business experience. Once elected, Smith pledges to work hard for the job growth and economic stability that Ohio needs by bringing business solutions to public problems. The 7th District includes Warren and Eastern Hamilton Counties and is now represented by State Sen. Ron Schuler (R-Sycamore Township).
